Phones take great photographs. Use these tips to provide me with a suitable reference picture.
Look at a good reference photograph.
- Direct light on one side of face
- Background colour is different from face
- Photograph is of the head
- Taken at the subject’s eye level
A good photograph helps me get details into your portrait.

Photographs poor for portrait use.
Watch out for these common issues.
- Out of focus
- Pet is looking up at us, where is the neck
- Face takes up small part of bigger picture
- Poor lighting, making it difficult to see details
- Background colour is very similar to the face

Out of focus, cropped ears

Dog looking up at us, difficult to see edge of head and neck

Dog’s face is small part of a big photograph

Although light is there, it’s lighting up top of head, not face
We’ve worked with some of the best companies.
If you have poorer quality photographs, or want to surprise someone with a portrait gift, send them to me. Sometimes, a few poorer quality images help me fill in any “detail” gaps.
I take the reference photograph, depending on your location.
